Odesa Literary Museum, Odesa
A museum in the 1850s palace of the Princes Gagarin on Lanzheronivska Street, since December 2024 on the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection.
The Odesa Literary Museum was founded by a resolution of the Council of Ministers in 1977 and opened to visitors in 1984. It was given the palace of the Princes Gagarin, an architectural monument built in the 1850s; the museum's website names Ludwig Otton as the architect, travels.in.ua names Louis César Otton. According to travels.in.ua, the Gagarins handed the palace over to the city, and in 1899–1903 the Literary and Artistic Society met here. The exhibition occupies 21 halls in the enfilade of the first floor and four halls on the ground floor, and in the courtyard there is an open-air exhibition — the “Sculpture Garden” with the “Odesa Courtyard”. On 20 July 2023 the blast wave from a russian missile attack damaged most of the museum's windows, ceilings collapsed in two halls, and interiors and exhibits were damaged. In December 2024 UNESCO added the museum to the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection.
