A theatre of 1887 by the Viennese office of Fellner and Helmer; it performs even in wartime — with a shelter.

The first city theatre opened on 10 February 1810; it burned down on the night of 2 January 1873. The new building was erected to a design by the Viennese office of Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer: the foundation stone was laid on 16 September 1884, the opening took place on 1 October 1887. In 1925 a fire destroyed the stage and damaged the auditorium. Reconstruction lasted from 1996 to 2007, and on the day of its reopening in 2007 the theatre received national status. The building has three floors above ground and five underground levels; since 28 November 2024 performances have also been held in the underground space, and fewer tickets are sold than the capacity so that everyone can reach the shelter in time.

1 Chaikovskoho Lane; box office (048) 780-15-09 (operahouse.od.ua). During an alert the audience is moved to the shelter on the underground levels (Suspilne, 30.11.2025). Tours of the building according to the theatre's schedule.
