Olesko Castle
One of the oldest castles of Halychyna, set on a high hill.
First mentioned in 1327, under prince Yurii II; the castle stands on a lone hill amid the plain, from which the whole neighbourhood is in view. At the start of the 17th century Ivan Danylovych rebuilt it into a palace-fortress (the work was finished in 1620), and it was here in 1629 that Jan III Sobieski was born — the future king, who never owned the castle. The earthquake of 1838 cracked the walls, and a fire from lightning in 1951 finished off the ruin; the restoration of 1954–1965 under Andrii Shuliar brought the castle back to life, and on 21 December 1975 a museum-reserve of the Lviv Art Gallery opened here. On display are Galician-Volhynian icon painting of the 15th–18th centuries, Ukrainian portraiture and European sculpture; around it lies a park with sculptures from the open-air symposium of 1996. Legend has it: on the night of Sobieski's birth a marble table cracked from a clap of thunder.
