Ostroh Academy
The academy of 1576 where Ivan Fedorov printed the Ostroh Bible.
The academy was founded in 1576 by prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn Ostrozky and princess Halshka Ostrozka. In 1580 first printer Ivan Fedorov opened its printing house — from here came the first "Bukvar" primer and the famous Ostroh Bible. In 1579 Halshka bequeathed to the academy six thousand kopas in Lithuanian count, and it is in that will that the name "Ostroh Academy" is first recorded officially; its first rector was Herasym Smotrytsky. The Ostroh Bible was printed on 12 August 1581: the first complete printed Slavonic Bible, 1256 pages, in a run of one and a half to two thousand, of which about three hundred survive. The old academy's walls now hold the museum of its history.
The academy history museum sits in its historic walls. Guided visits only, by appointment, Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00.
