Palanok Castle, Mukachevo
Koriatovych's stronghold on a volcanic hill — never once taken by storm.
The castle on its 68-metre volcanic hill was thoroughly rebuilt at the end of the 14th century by Podillian prince Fedir Koriatovych. In 1633–1711 Palanok was the stronghold of the Rakoczi family and the centre of Ferenc II Rakoczi's war of liberation; it is named among the five European fortresses never taken by storm. A museum now works in the castle.
The castle museum is open daily; from November it switches to winter hours, 9:00–17:00 (mukachevo.net, 03.11.2025). For holidays the hours are adjusted separately — check before you travel.
