Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, Pistyn

openas of 2026-10-011600Pokuttia

A wooden church on Pysareva Hill, surrounded by ramparts and walls against Tatar raids.

Sources date the parish on the table-like hill between two streams to 1600; the present five-log-frame building on a cruciform plan, with a sloping tented roof and a low octagon, is of the 19th century — 1861 or 1868 according to different sources. Around it survives the monastery fortification — ramparts and stone walls that protected against Tatar raids. The old iconostasis was moved here from another, larger church, which is why it is cramped here. Nearby are an 18th-century bell tower, an old cemetery and a suspended wooden footbridge across the river. An architectural monument of national significance within the Hutsulshchyna park.

The village of Pistyn in Kosiv district, 28 km from Kolomyia. No visiting hours — a working parish.
