Ruins of the Kuropatwas' 16th-century pentagonal castle in the village of Pniv near Nadvirna.

The stone castle in the village of Pniv near Nadvirna was built in the second half of the 16th century by the Kuropatwa nobles for protection against Turkish-Tatar raids on Pokuttia. In plan it is an irregular pentagon with corner towers; castles.com.ua gives the thickness of the walls as one and a half metres, karpaty.info as up to 1.8 m. In autumn 1648 the castle was besieged for several weeks by the 15-thousand-strong rebel army of Semen Vysochan: according to karpaty.info, the walls were taken; according to castles.com.ua, historians hold opposite views on whether the stronghold was captured. In the 18th century the castle passed to the Austrian state, and at the beginning of the 19th century leaseholders took it apart for building material. In 2010 one of the towers collapsed: according to castles.com.ua, the northern one, after the flood of 30 June; according to report.if.ua, the eastern one, undermined by the river. According to 24 Kanal (2025), in 2023 the wall of one of the towers crumbled, probably because of erosion, and the European grant project for which the castle had been put forward was suspended because of the war.

An unattended ruin: keep clear of the walls, watch children on top.
