Yurii Fedkovych Museum Homestead, Putyla
A Hutsul house recreated in 1974 on the site of the homestead where Yurii Fedkovych was born in 1834 — a literary and ethnographic museum in the centre of Putyla.
Osyp Dominik Hordynsky de Fedkovych, known as Yurii Fedkovych, was born on 8 August 1834 in Putyla and died on 11 January 1888 (karpaty.info, cheremoskyi-park.in.ua). The original wooden house of the homestead was built back in the late 18th century; the homestead burned down, and in the post-war years a new building for the writer's literary museum was put up on its site, while in 1974 the house itself was recreated and a memorial museum opened in it (andy-travel.com.ua, karpaty.rocks). It is a typical Hutsul house of spruce logs, slightly longer than usual, with an entrance hall, a small living room and a large front room (andy-travel.com.ua, maps.visicom.ua). The interior holds a tiled stove, chests, a large table and carved furniture (cheremoskyi-park.in.ua), Hutsul clothing and carved utensils, and separate displays tell of the writer's life and work (travels.in.ua, karpaty.info); every summer the festival “Shovkova Kosytsia” is held here. In the yard an authentic well from Fedkovych's time survives, and his bust stands opposite the entrance (karpaty.rocks, andy-travel.com.ua). The homestead belongs to the Fedkovych Literary Memorial Museum, a branch of the Chernivtsi Regional Museum of Local History (regmus.cv.ua). In Putyla, according to andy-travel.com.ua, also worth seeing are the wooden St Nicholas Church of 1885, built partly at Fedkovych's expense, his monument of 2004 by the council building, and the “Torakivska Stinka” outcrop at the entrance from the Vyzhnytsia side.
