The Vyshnia estate where Nikolai Pirogov spent his last twenty years.

The surgeon Nikolai Pirogov bought the Vyshnia estate near the village of Sheremetka at an auction in Kyiv in 1859, when he was trustee of the Kyiv school district. After his retirement in 1861 he settled here; in 1862–1866 he supervised the training of young scholars in Germany, and in 1866 a house and a pharmacy were built on the estate. Pirogov died on 23 November 1881; his body was embalmed by the St Petersburg physician D. Vyvodtsev, and in 1885 St Nicholas's Church was built over the burial vault to V. Sychuhov's design. During the occupation in the Second World War the estate fell into decay and its buildings were destroyed. The museum opened on 9 September 1947, for the 100th anniversary of Pirogov's first use of ether anaesthesia on the battlefield; in 1997 it was granted national status. Today there is the house with an exhibition, the pharmacy museum with a consulting room and an operating room, the church-necropolis and a memorial park.

Vinnytsia is under attack: on 03.09.2026 drone debris damaged more than a dozen houses in a private-housing area (VITA, 03.09.2026), and on the evening of 25.09.2026 a powerful explosion was heard in the city (cvd.vn.ua, 26.09.2026). The estate is on the outskirts of the city.
