On 17 March 1943 a punitive action by SS men and Polish auxiliary police wiped out 85% of the village.

On the night of 17 March 1943 SS men together with policemen of the Polish Schutzmannschaft surrounded Remel near Oleksandriia and burned the village — revenge for UPA actions nearby, including the killing of the German commandant and the Ukrainian police going over to the insurgents on 15 March. The dead are counted differently: 390 by the pre-war village head, which was 85% of the inhabitants, over 400 according to the community, or 460 — as the mass grave is recorded in the 2010 list of the Rivne District Council; 73 people survived. A wooden cross stood on the mass grave, later replaced by a tall cross of black granite; next to it is the Church of the Myrrh-bearing Women. Separately, the village has a Soviet-era "Monument to the Victims of Fascism", listed among the historical monuments of Rivne district. The village honours the dead every 17 March.
