The core of Lviv's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The square keeps its medieval layout: the town hall in the middle, burgher houses around the perimeter. Every townhouse carries its own history of owners and rebuilds, so the walking route here goes house by house, not "around the square". On 30 June 1941, in the Prosvita building at Rynok 10 — under the same roof as the Dnister bank — the National Assembly gathered, and Yaroslav Stetsko stepped onto the balcony to proclaim the Act of Restoration of the Ukrainian State. The Germans answered with arrests: Stepan Bandera was detained on 4 July, Stetsko on the 7th, and both were later held in Sachsenhausen for three years. In August 1939 Solomiya Krushelnytska returned to Lviv and stayed here to the end of her life; in 1990 Viacheslav Chornovil became head of the Lviv regional council.

The starting point of most routes in the region.
