Schönborn Palace, Karpaty
The Schönborn hunting palace of the 1890s, now the Karpaty sanatorium.
Count Erwin Friedrich Schönborn-Buchheim put up the residence in 1890–1895 on the site of a wooden hunting lodge, in a neo-Romantic spirit with neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance elements. The building was designed as a calendar: 365 windows, one of them walled up for the leap year, 52 rooms, 12 entrances and 4 towers. The park still has the lake whose outline repeated the map of Austria-Hungary, though it has lost its original shape. Since 1946 the palace has housed the Karpaty cardiological and neurological sanatorium.
The palace is the main building of the working Karpaty sanatorium: admission inside is limited, and entry to the sanatorium grounds is paid (Espreso.Zakhid, 08.06.2025). There is no recent information on hours or price — check on the spot.
