Serednie Castle
The ruin of a 13th-century Romanesque donjon in the village of Serednie near Uzhhorod.
What is left of the castle is a donjon 18.6 × 16.5 m with walls 2.6 m thick; the tower stood about 20 m high and had three tiers. It is the only structure in the region where Romanesque elements have survived — arched loophole windows and fragments of the third tier — and beside it the foundations of defensive walls with corner towers can be traced. Tradition ascribes the building to the Templars; after the order was dissolved in 1312 the castle passed to the monks of the Order of Saint Paul. Since 2025 work has been under way here under an Interreg VI-A NEXT project worth 321.4 thousand euro, with a deadline of March 2027.
An open ruin in the middle of the village, in a hazardous condition (Varosh, 16.05.2026): do not climb the walls or stand next to them, and bring shoes for uneven ground. Work under a cross-border project continues until the end of March 2027 (Uzhgorod24, 19.07.2025), so part of the site may be closed off.
