Drohobych Saltworks
Ukraine's oldest continuously operating enterprise: the first written mention of salt boiling dates from 1390.
The saltworks on Solonyi Stavok Street is the oldest continuously operating enterprise in Ukraine: the first written mention of salt production in Drohobych dates from 1390, and according to ReHERIT the trade has existed here since at least the 13th century. Brine is extracted from a depth of about 50 metres, poured into pans and heated until the water evaporates and only salt remains. The brine storage chambers were built in the 1860s without a single nail. Nine salt loaves are depicted on the town's coat of arms. In 2024 the State Property Fund included the plant in the list for privatisation, at the beginning of 2025 the process was suspended, and in August 2026 the enterprise was put up for privatisation for the second time. On 3 September 2026 Drohobych City Council asked that the saltworks not be sold but transferred to the town: according to the deputies, seven of the nine heritage structures on the site are in unsatisfactory or unsafe condition.
