Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Spas
A five-domed wooden church of 1811 in the village of Spas near Kolomyia — a working church of a UGCC community on the “Carpathian Trail of Wooden Architecture” route.
The village of Spas (formerly Ispas) lies in the Carpathian foothills along the Pistynka river; it is first mentioned in written sources in 1433. According to kl.informator.ua, a Church of the Transfiguration was built here in 1589–1616 and burned down in the 1620s. In 1811 a new five-domed wooden church with a shingle roof was erected at the parishioners' expense — according to castles.com.ua, three years after the completion of the five-domed church in neighbouring Nyzhnii Verbizh (1808). The building took on its present appearance after a reconstruction in 1853, and in 1972 the shingle roof was replaced with galvanised sheet metal. The building is large, cruciform in plan, and has five domes. It is a working church of a UGCC community. In 2021 the church was included in the cross-border tourist route “Carpathian Trail of Wooden Architecture”, created under the Cross-border Cooperation Programme “Poland — Belarus — Ukraine 2014–2020”. Sources differ on its protected status: travels.in.ua marks the church as an architectural monument, while the author of castles.com.ua (2016–2018) wrote that it had not been entered in any register of monuments.
Address: 9 Tserkovna Street, Spas village, Kolomyia district; tel. +380 98 774 8518 (travels.in.ua, updated 29.05.2025). The church is in the northern part of the village (kolrda.gov.ua), ≈7 km south of the Kolomyia town hall (by coordinates). The sources give no opening hours. The patronal feast is the Transfiguration of the Lord; in 2023 it was celebrated on 19 August (kl.informator.ua) — since the UGCC switched to the new calendar, the date should be checked with the parish. There is no recent (2025–2026) confirmation of access, and castles.com.ua (photos from 2016 and 2018) reported that the northern part of the building had been propped up with wooden posts.
