Gammalsvenskby Museum, Gotland
A museum of the descendants of a Swedish village in Kherson region who resettled to Sweden in 1929.
Gammalsvenskby — Staroshvedske in Ukrainian, now part of Zmiivka in Kherson region — was founded by Swedish-speaking peasants from the Estonian island of Hiiumaa: by Catherine II's decree of 8 March 1781 about a thousand people set out, and 535 reached the place on 1 May 1782. After war, revolution and famine the community left the village in the summer of 1929: on 1 August almost 900 settlers were met in Trelleborg by Prince Carl. About 500 of them settled on Gotland; some families returned to Ukraine in 1930–1931 and were caught by collectivisation, repression and the Holodomor. The museum in the former parish house tells exactly this story; the society Föreningen Svenskbyborna, which runs it, now collects aid for the residents of Zmiivka.
