Grave of Ivan Sirko, Kapulivka
A mound above the Dnipro where the koshovyi otaman rests — opposite the occupied bank, under daily drones.
Ivan Sirko died on 1 August 1680 and was buried near the Chortomlyk Sich under a stone cross; in 1709 russian troops desecrated the Cossack graves and destroyed the cross on the otaman's grave. On 23 November 1967, because of the threat of flooding by the Kakhovka reservoir, the remains were reburied on the Storozhova, or Babyna, Mohyla 1.3 kilometres from Kapulivka. In 1980 a new sculptural image of the otaman by Halyna Lebedynska's reconstruction was set on the mound, and on 21 August 2000 the skull, which had been kept in Moscow, and earlier removed fragments of the skeleton were ceremonially reinterred in the grave.
An open mound with no ticket office. A front-line zone opposite the occupied left bank: Kapulivka is attacked by drones daily — do not travel until the situation stabilises.
