Tarakaniv Fort
A concrete fort of 1890 that never saw battle.
The rhombus-shaped fort was built in 1890 by order of Alexander III to guard the railway on the then russian-Austrian border. The concrete-and-earth stronghold with a two-storey barracks, ramparts and a fourteen-metre moat was never used as intended. Now the fort is derelict and slowly crumbling — which makes the ruin all the stronger.
Entry is forbidden: the fort is unsafe, and part of the masonry collapsed in April 2026. It belongs to the Ministry of Defence; no repairs are planned.
