A castle of the 1540s above the pond, from which the city began.

Ternopil grew around a fortress: in 1540 king Sigismund I granted the charter to build it, and by 1548 the castle stood. Later rebuilds turned the stronghold into a palace above the Ternopil pond — the defensive character reads now mostly in the thickness of the walls. The city's oldest building. In 1675 a Turkish army took and burned the castle — the rebuilding took a quarter of a century; the last major restoration was in 1951–1954, when the lower tier of vaulted casemates was walled up and flooded.

The castle can be viewed from outside at any time, easily combined with a walk along the lake embankment. The city's Tourist Information Centre (2 Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street) runs tours about the castle by mandatory advance booking (Ternopil City Council website, 29.04.2026; Misto, 21.09.2026). On 13.09.2026 russian drones hit a transport infrastructure facility and industrial premises in Ternopil, and one person was injured (LB.ua, 13.09.2026); on 29.09.2026 debris from a downed drone fell on an industrial facility (LB.ua, 29.09.2026).
