Sokilska Rock, Tiudiv
A cliff about 100 m high above the Cheremosh at the edge of the Sokilskyi ridge, a geological natural monument.
Sokilska Rock is a cliff about 250 m long and about 100 m high above the Cheremosh between the villages of Tiudiv and Velykyi Rozhyn, on the border with Chernivtsi region. The river carved the rock out of flysch strata about 25 million years old; it closes the Sokilskyi ridge (940 m), which stretches 15 km between the Rybnytsia and the Cheremosh. At the end of the 19th century an obelisk to Taras Shevchenko was set up by the rock — one of the first monuments to the poet in Prykarpattia; it was destroyed in the First World War and restored in 1990. The rock has the status of a geological natural monument; peregrine falcons and eagle owls nest on its walls.
The rock stands above the R-64 road Chernivtsi–Putyla between Tiudiv and Vyzhnytsia; by the Shevchenko monument are a car park and a souvenir market, further on a suspension bridge over the Cheremosh (24 Kanal, 18.03.2025). The paths onto the ridge have no railings — not in bad weather and not in winter.
