Tryhiria Transfiguration Monastery, Tryhiria

openas of 2026-09-221583Polissia

A monastery of 1583 on the high bank of the Teteriv above the canyon.

The first documented mention is 1583, according to the monastery's synodikon; the historiographer A. Malevych supposed that the monastery already existed under Prince Volodymyr Olgerdovych. The monastery was destroyed by raiders, in 1613 it was restored by the Voronych brothers, and the Khmelnytsky uprising ravaged it again. In the 18th century the monastery passed to the Greek Catholics and from 1777 maintained a charitable hospital; in 1839 it was handed to the Orthodox Church. The wooden Transfiguration church dates from 1685; the stone one was built in 1854–1873. In the 1930s the monastery was closed and turned into a warehouse and a school; in 1990 it was returned to the church. Its main sacred object is the 18th-century icon of the Tryhiria Mother of God, which according to tradition was found in a spring near the monastery.

A working men's monastery — dress and behave accordingly. About 40 minutes by bus from Zhytomyr.
