Citadel, Lviv
An Austrian fortress of the 1850s above the centre — a place of heavy war memory.
The Austrians built the Citadel complex in 1852–1854: Maximilian towers and barracks were to keep the restless city in check. In 1941–1944 the Nazis ran the Stalag-328 POW camp here, in which tens of thousands died — the memorial on the slope recalls them. The hill is open for walks; a hotel and offices occupy some towers.
A place where thousands of prisoners died: behave as at a memorial.
