St Michael's Church, Uzhok
A Boiko wooden church of 1745 on the UNESCO list.
The Church of the Synaxis of the Archangel Michael in Uzhok, near the Uzhok Pass, was built of spruce beams and roofed with shingles; it was built and consecrated on 11 June 1745 (website of the Stavne community). The inscription above the door names the craftsmen Pavlo Toniv from Bitlia and Ivan Tsyhanyn from Tykhyi. It is of the Boiko type: according to the ICOMOS evaluation, three towers with pyramidal roofs, the one over the central nave larger and in three tiers. In 1895 the lower beams of the nave were replaced, and in 1927 a two-tier wooden bell tower was put up next to the church. Legend: the church once stood higher up the slope and was moved down because it was hard for older people to climb. The carved gilded iconostasis is dated to the 18th century by the guide “Karpaty” and to the 17th by “Karpatskyi Derevianyi Shliakh”. On 21 June 2013 the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of eight Ukrainian churches in a joint nomination with Poland; according to ICOMOS, it is a working Orthodox church.
