On 6 June 1945 a unit of the National Armed Forces (NSZ) under Mieczysław Pazderski 'Szary' killed 194–196 people in Wierzchowiny near Krasnystaw — mostly Orthodox Ukrainians, among them only 45 adult men, the rest women, children and the old; between 16 and 30 Jehovah's Witnesses also died. The figures 194–196 are given by Grzegorz Motyka, Rafał Wnuk and Mariusz Zajączkowski; higher estimates (about 400) lack reliable confirmation. On 15 June 1953 the Supreme Court of the Polish People's Republic found the unit's actions a crime against humanity, and Poland's courts after 1989 upheld that verdict in 1998–1999.
