Struk Church, Yasinia
A Hutsul wooden church of 1824 built without a single nail — UNESCO heritage.
The cruciform single-domed Church of the Ascension was built in 1824; by tradition the shepherd Ivan Struk raised it in thanks for a flock saved through a bitter winter. The log structure was assembled without nails and is almost entirely covered in shingles; inside survives a carved iconostasis of the same year, and a separate eleven-metre bell tower of 1813 has stood in the churchyard since 1895. In June 2013 the church entered the UNESCO World Heritage List together with seven other wooden churches of the Carpathians. Services are held in turn by the Greek Catholic and Orthodox communities.
The church stands three kilometres from the centre of Yasinia on the far bank of the Chorna Tysa — reach it by the suspension bridge. The surest way inside is during a service.
