Yavornytsky Museum, Dnipro
The region's first museum, 1849: the Kernosivka idol and relics of the Zaporozhian Sich.
In February 1849 the Public Museum was created in Katerynoslav on the initiative of the gymnasium director Yakiv Hrakhov and governor Andrii Fabr — the first museum of the region. Dmytro Yavornytsky headed the museum from 1902 to 1933 and gave it his own collection; the museum has borne his name since 1940. The purpose-built museum building was erected in 1905 under the architects Sandetsky and Panafutin. The museum received national status by presidential decree on 15 February 2010; its holdings number about 240,000 items, among them the Kernosivka idol of the third millennium BC and relics of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.
