Zhovkva Castle
A castle at the heart of a Renaissance town planned as an ensemble.
The value here is not just the castle but the fact that the whole town was built as a coherent Renaissance ensemble with a square, fortifications and churches. Part of the castle is restored, part still in progress. The castle was built by the architect Pawel Szczesliwy for Hetman Stanislaw Zolkiewski in 1594–1605; in 1674 Jan III Sobieski turned it into a royal residence. Four corner towers and four wings around the courtyard now house a museum-reserve of the Lviv Art Gallery.
Museum-reserve: Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00 (ticket office until 17:30), closed Monday and Tuesday. Allow time for the town centre, not just the castle.
