The main gate of Yaroslav's city. What stands today is a reconstruction over the ruins.

The ceremonial entrance to 11th-century Kyiv. It matters to understand what you are looking at: the structure above the genuine remains is a 1982 reconstruction built to the era's best guesses about its appearance. The authentic walls are hidden inside. A rare case where the "probable appearance" was built full-scale. Bohdan Khmelnytsky rode into Kyiv through the ruins of this gate in December 1648 — the best-known scene in Ukrainian history that nobody ever saw: Mykola Ivasiuk painted it two and a half centuries later. The gate was raised under Yaroslav the Wise: the chronicle names it under the year 1037, the same year as Saint Sophia.

Inside is a museum with its own hours: from 14.04.2026 Tue–Thu 10:00–18:00, Fri–Sun 11:00–19:00, closed Monday (Kyiv.News, 13.04.2026). The exterior is always open. Kyiv is regularly attacked, and in September strikes also reached the Shevchenkivskyi district: on 25.09.2026 (Obozrevatel, 25.09.2026) and on the night of 27.09.2026 (Telegraf, 27.09.2026).
