Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
A cave monastery above the Dnipro, the second half of the same UNESCO site.
The monastery grew out of caves dug by monks in the slope above the Dnipro, and over centuries acquired a surface ensemble that now reads mostly as baroque. The Upper and Lower Lavra have different access regimes, and those have shifted in recent years — this is the case where you check the point's status before the trip, not after. The stone walls around the monastery — 1,290 metres long, about seven metres high, with four towers — were built between 1698 and 1702 at the expense of Hetman Ivan Mazepa: a million gold pieces from his own treasury.
The Dormition Cathedral was damaged by a russian drone on 15.06.2026 and is closed: a conservation shelter is being installed over it, and the restoration will take about two years (RISU, 29.09.2026). The rest of the reserve is open daily 10:00–18:00; the Near Caves are open only to groups by advance booking and are closed on Monday and Tuesday, and cave visits are suspended during an alert (reserve website, checked 01.10.2026).
