The first major battle of a Ukrainian army in the modern era, 29 April – 4 May 1915.

From 29 April to 4 May 1915 the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, as part of the Austro-Hungarian army, fought for the 958-metre Makivka mountain in the High Beskyd against russian troops of General Alftan's 78th Infantry Division — and held its positions. This was the first major battle of a Ukrainian army in the modern era against the army of the russian empire. Losses of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen: 42 killed, 76 wounded, 35 captured. In 1998–1999 the Sich Riflemen's cemetery on Makivka was rebuilt: 50 crosses on individual graves and a monument. Every year in early May hundreds of people climb the mountain; on 3 May 2026 the latest commemoration took place. Here too, according to Lokalna Istoriia, in April 1915 Yevhen Konovalets was taken into russian captivity — then a soldier of the 19th infantry regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army, later a colonel and head of the OUN Leadership; the ESU dates his captivity to June of the same year.

A mountain memorial cemetery of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen with no opening hours: the climb is on foot from the village of Tukhlia via Hrabovets — about 13 kilometres, 5–6 hours (24 Kanal, 06.05.2025), or from the town of Slavske; in daylight only. The annual commemoration is in early May; in 2026 the ascent took place on 3 May (Lviv Regional Military Administration, 25.04.2026).
